A local pupil has been selected to have his art hung in an Oxford gallery alongside works by Bob Dylan and Ronnie Wood.
Elijah, from New Hinksey C.E. Primary School, was named the winner of leading group of retail art galleries, Castle Fine Art’s, ‘Young Fine Artist’ competition, designed to encourage the next generation of artistic talent.
The competition challenged pupils to come up with works inspired by their favourite artist from the gallery’s walls.
This comes following an earlier visit, when 29 budding artists from the school were invited to go on a tour of the gallery at Westgate Shopping Centre. Stacy Bodkin from Castle Fine Art taught them about the history of the artists, their inspirations and techniques to inspire pupils and help develop their creative skills as they undergo their own art studies at school.
Elijah’s winning artwork was influenced by landscape painter, Richard Rowan, and will be on display at the gallery for a month. Elijah was also presented with a £50 voucher to spend at leading art supply store, Cass Art. Fellow pupil Alex won second place for his interpretation of works by contemporary artist, Peter Smith, while Neve’s interpretation of Scarlett Raven’s oil paintings awarded her third place.
Mrs Nash, Class Teacher for New Hinksey C.E Primary School, said: “This has been a fantastic project for the children. Visiting a gallery with such a diverse range of art was very beneficial to their studies and we’ve all enjoyed learning more about the artists and their techniques.
“The competition has left the children feeling motivated to put their creative skills into practice back at school.”
Stacy Bodkin from Castle Fine Art said: “It was great fun having the pupils from New Hinksey C.E Primary School here learning about our artists. They all brought their own unique perspectives to the gallery and I hope they learned from us as much as we learned from them.
“It’s clear to see how much time and thought Elijah gave to the winning piece and I’m sure Richard Rowan would be thrilled to see his interpretation of his work.”
